Kratom in Indonesia: Its History, Use and Legality

Kratom, or what is known in Indonesian as “biak leaf”, is a plant that grows wild in the forests of Indonesia. This plant has been used by Indonesian people as a traditional medicine since hundreds of years ago.

The history of the use of kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) in Indonesia is very long, and there are many folklore associated with this plant. One well-known story is about a man who was seriously ill and was cured by a shaman using a leaf of the seed. After recovering, the man started growing kratom and giving the leaves to people in need.

The use of kratom in Indonesia is not only as a traditional medicine, but also as a traditional ingredient in certain ceremonies. Apart from that, kratom is also used as an additional ingredient in traditional drinks such as herbal medicine.

However, even though the use of kratom is very common in Indonesia, its legality is still being debated. Currently, kratom in Indonesia is considered a plant that is not regulated by law, so its use and trade are still very free.

Some parties consider that this can endanger the community because there is no clear supervision and quality standards. However, many also think that regulations that are too strict can hinder the use of kratom which is beneficial to society.

Along with the increasing international interest in kratom, the Indonesian government is currently considering rearranging the legality of kratom in the country. However, it is still unclear how this new regulation will impact the use and trade of kratom in Indonesia.
