AKA is an organization based in the United States. Founded in 2014, the American Kratom Association (AKA) is committed to restoring consumers’ full access to kratom and to preserving and protecting the freedom of consumers in the United States to make their own choices about their well-being and maintain a healthy lifestyle. In Indonesia, kratom has been cultivated by the people of West Kalimantan since 2010. Currently, the area of kratom in West Kalimantan is 11,384 hectares and is spread over 23 sub-districts and 282 villages. It was recorded that until July 2021, the number of kratom exports to the United States reached around 400 tons. Hundreds of thousands of people depend on kratom plants, including kratom farmers, kratom middlemen in the village, kratom processing, kratom exporters and so on.
BNN’s view of kratom
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is an Indonesian Non-Ministerial Government Institution (LPNK) which has the task of carrying out government duties in the field of prevention, eradication of abuse and illicit trafficking of narcotics, psychotropics, precursors and other addictive substances except for addictive substances for tobacco and alcohol. BNN is led by a head who reports directly to the President. BNN’s view of kratom is that “kratom is included in psychotropics,” said Moeldoko 8/08/2022 (antaranews.com). However, this is of course denied by researchers from the USA, who say that kratom is not classified as a psychotropic, this research will be the basis for further discussions in an effort to clarify regulations related to kratom in Indonesia.
What are the discussions carried out by AKA and the Indonesian government?

The research will be carried out by both parties where the results of the research will be useful for each country to determine the next step to make a decision on the legality of kratom.
- Consumer protection will be implemented
With consumer protection in place, Indonesia is required to export only the best quality kratom which is not contaminated by E. Coli bacteria, Salmonella and heavy metals. This of course must also relate to the minimum price that will be regulated by the Indonesian government.
